While watching the recent hit hollywood blockbuster I Am Legend, I was reminded how important off-site backups are. In this film, the character Dr. Robert Neville is researching a cure for a deadly virus. He carefully documents all of his research on video logs and even states his research is backed up on “six redundant hard drives”, showing a stack of external drives next to his computer. But then, near the end of the movie, the lab is blown-up and, of course, all I thought about was all the data and research that was destroyed.

While hard drive redundancy on a local workstation is a great idea to insure very little downtime in the case of a local hard drive failure, if backups are being made, copies should be made both in-house and off-site, so that the likes of accidents, fires, or acts-of-God do not leave you at a complete loss.

External DVD Burners or offsite network repositories are simple, easy ways to perform off site backups. And if those don’t seem convenient, there are also a number of paid services, such as Backblaze, that can also make off site backups secure and painless.

Here’s to hoping that Dr Neville’s research was backed up off-screen.

A common question that I receive from small businesses or independent IT professionals "What mail server do you use to host your own domains mail?" or "How did you setup your DNS servers to be redundant?". The answer is "I don’t administer the server that hosts my domains mail." and "I don’t run my own DNS servers for my domain.". These are services that are very simple to run, but also very crucial and high profile. Users notice pretty quickly when a mail server is down or when a domain name does not resolve and that is why I recommend that most small companies outsource those services. Google Apps is a easy to use mail service which is based off of the Gmail service – the limited access plan is even free to use, while the paid premiere service is available when needed. DNS Made Easy is a low-cost, efficient DNS service that will take the load off of your business having to insure multiple servers online and answering DNS queries 24/7. While there are lots of benefits to owning and controlling the servers that run mail and DNS, most small businesses and individuals will benefit more from letting other businesses take care of these services for them.

I’m not a big BitTorrent user, but I recently installed it on my Windows system, since it seemed to be the fastest way to download the newest Ubuntu release (7.04). Ubuntu came down quickly, but after a day, I noticed that I was having bandwidth problems. After a little research, I find that the dna.exe process, which was installed at the same time I installed BitTorrent, was using up a lot of bandwidth. I could not find exactly what this process does, but killing it seemed to solve most of my problems. I also found that I could uninstall it through the windows "Add/Remove Programs" manager. I would suggest all other BitTorrent users do the same for now.

Toad (http://www.toadsoft.com/) is a database and development tool used for administering and developing with Oracle, DB2, MS SQL Server, and MySQL. I haven’t used it in a long while because I had some bad experiences with some bugs in it, but am considering re-evaluating it.

The first time I used it was around 2001 when I was working on site at a contract and it was the preferred tool used by most of the developers there. We were using an Oracle database and I really preferred the sql plus client that Oracle provides because I felt closer to my comand-line roots. The bug I experienced with Toad was that a stored procedure I had written could not be found at all. The stored procedure was really there, it was running, but Toad could just not find it in its list. The solution was to remove the stored procedure via sql plus client and then re-create it in Toad.

The second instance was when I was working a separate contract and Toad had actually been banned from use. Again, we were working with an Oracle database and another developer had been executing some queries with Toad that left some tables locked causing a major outage. I can’t completely confirm that the problem wasn’t user related as I know there are a few ways to lock up a table, but being my second experience working with Toad, it didn’t leave a good impression on me.

I am using MySQL for a project and I noticed that Toad offers the MySQL version of its product as Freeware, so I am considering giving it another go. This would also give me an opportunity to say "Three strikes and your out!".

Newegg.com is one of my favorite online computer vendors, mostly because of their reasonable prices and large user base which likes to write reviews. They have recently launched a new site called Eggxpert.com which not only hosts consumer forums and reviews, but also consumer blogs. First retail site that I’ve used that has something of that nature.
